1964年貝爾兄弟(Robert Bell & Ronald Bell)於紐澤西組成了一個純樂器演奏樂團「Jazziacs」，以演奏爵士及放克音樂為主。
期間也不時和一些地方性的爵士名人如：McCoy Tyner, Paroah Sanders、Leon Thomas等人共同演出。
1969年改名Kool & The Gang,最初他們的專輯並沒有受到太多的矚目，直到1973年他們略為修正曲風朝較流行的方向走，並發行了「Wild & Peaceful」專輯才初享成功的滋味 —
專輯中有三支單曲「Funky Stuff」、「Jungle Boogie」(Billboard流行單曲榜No.4，並停留榜內22週之久）、「Hollywood Swinging」得到金唱片；1976年終於以『週末狂熱』中的「Open Sesame」得到了象徵音樂界的最高榮耀『葛萊美獎』。
在新的主唱J. T. Singer加入後，Kool & The Gang達到了事業的高峰！
1979年他們發行了「Ladies Night」，他出色的嗓音使得這個原本是純音樂演奏的樂團，更加能夠打入主流市場，單曲「Too Hot」、「Ladies Night」分別達到了金唱片與白金唱片的成績。
接下來1979到1982年，他們推出的四張專輯又分別得到了四張白金唱片與金唱片，至此，他們已經是最受歡迎的派對樂團了。
事業的最高峰在他們推出「Celebrate」專輯後出現，單曲「Celebration」成為經典作品，並且在全國如火如荼的傳唱，有成為『國歌』之勢！並且在當年成為伊朗釋放美國人質、世界盃足球賽的主題曲。
這個曾在1969~1987年間締造33首入榜歌曲、19首進入Top 40成績叱吒Billboard流行排行榜的耀眼組合，對流行樂壇造成不可抹滅的深遠影響，Madonna、Janet Jackson…等頂尖藝人都曾取樣他們的歌曲。他們的音樂歷經30多年時光依然歷久彌新。
